The Creation (FHE)

Since I was so exhausted from traveling and unpacking on Monday, I pushed Family Home Evening back to Tuesday night.  I taught from the Gospel Principles manual, chapter5: The Creation.  I've been looking forward to teaching June this lesson as there are so many activities we can do!

Song: We sang song #231: All Things Bright and Beautiful from The Children's Songbook.  It goes as follows:
(Chorus) All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.

The little flow'r that opens, each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors, he made their tiny wings.

The purple-headed mountain, the river running by,
The sunset and the morning that brighten up the sky.
The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them ev'ry one.
The tall trees in the greenwood, the meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water we gather ev'ry day.
Lesson:  Under the direction of Heavenly Father and through priesthood power, Jesus Christ created the Earth and everything in it (D&C 76:24).  The earth and all in it were first created spiritually before they were created physically (Moses 3:5).  Under Heavenly Father's direction, Christ formed and organized the earth in the following six days (or periods) (Moses 1-3, Genesis 1-2:1-7).

#1) He divided light from darkness to make day and night.
#2) He divided the waters from the dry land.
#3) He made the sun, moon, and star.
#4) He beautified the earth by making vegetation, trees, flowers, and all form of plant life with the ability to reproduce.
#5) He created fishes, fowls, beasts, and insects of all kinds with the ability to reproduce their own kind.
#6) The earth was ready for the greatest creation of all--mankind.  Adam and Eve were formed and given bodies that resemble our Heavenly Parents (Moses 2:26, Genesis 1:27).
#7) When the Lord was finished with His creations, he rested for a time.

God's creations show His love for us and for all things.  As we consider all He has created for us:  the mountains, rivers, beaches, lakes, forests, animals, flowers, weather, universe, etc; we can begin to understand what wise, powerful, and loving beings Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are!  They have shown such great love for all of us by providing for our needs and also giving us this beauty.  Plant and animal life are made to give us joy (D&C 59:18-19).  God's creations are many, yet he knows and loves them all (Moses 1:35).

Activity:  I designated a room for performing the creative periods.  June had to "create" the event that happened on each day.

#1) Divide the light from darkness to make night and day:  Turn on and off a light switch in a dark room.

#2) Divide waters from dry land:  In a tub filled with 1-2 inches of water, place in some towels to represent dry land.

#3) Sun, moon, and stars each with their dominion:  in a dark room, place up glow stars for the stars, a night light for the moon, and the room light for the sun.

#4) Vegetation and all forms of plant life:  June placed up a bouquet of flowers, bananas, and fake greenry.

#5) Fishes, fowls, beasts, insects:  June placed her water toys (ducks and fish) in the tub, and her "land" animals by the flowers on the counter.

#6) Mankind: She placed two dolls, a male and female doll, on the counter.

#7) Rest:  She got to lay down in her bed to rest from all her labors.

June loved creating the world.  The parts she most enjoyed were putting up the stars, picking out her animals, and placing the plants.

  1. You have the BEST FHE ideas. I think many LDS mommies of young children would be interested in seeing these great ideas you come up with!

    1. Thanks! I put a lot of thought and effort into planning the activities so June will enjoy them. I'd love nothing more than for others to benefit from these as well.
